Grandad Fairlie and Nick
Nick Wadley recalls 'They're wonderful pictures at Fairlie station. [See pictures 1510 and 1511. Ed.] I was there, with Grandad Fairlie [James Fairlie] and my mother [Kate Wadley (Fairlie), Kitty], in 1952. We stayed in Glasgow for a week's holiday while Grandad was judging a carnation show at the Kelvin Halls. We took several trips down the Clyde, I remember going rowing by myself in the rain at Largs. Grandad Fairlie was a tyrant about alcohol (about most things actually). I remember Kitty furtively getting room service to bring us a drink one night, without waking him next door. I've got a photo somewhere, taken sitting on Fairlie station but sadly without the sign, 17-year-old me and Grandad. [This is it. Ed.]'
and
'It is Fairlie [Station,] ... we went there specially and kitty took the photo with our old folding vestpocket kodak -- that's why there's light coming in, the leather bellows were wearing out (I've got the carrying case strap round my neck). I remember it well, as the song says. I remember Glasgow Central station too (LMS railways), we were staying at the Station Hotel there. It was the first place I'd been where you could buy tomorrow's papers at midnight, which I did a couple of times - very exciting stuff for me, just out of school. I remember Uncle Bill [Harold Fairlie] took me to his club for lunch, a few weeks before we went. It was the first time I'd drunk Pym's No.1
and he gave me five pounds pocket money, in crisp brown ten-shilling notes. I'd never had so much money before. I remember feeling very grown-up.
I used one of the notes to pay the room service when Kitty [Kate Wadley (Fairlie)] and I had our furtive midnight drinks ' Fairlie railway station UK 1952

Grandad Fairlie and Kitty Wadley
Here are a couple of old pictures I've managed to salvage a scan of from old negatives that tony sent me recently. The one of Kitty with Grandad Fairlie I'm pretty sure is one I took in scotland, 1952. The other looks later, maybe 60s, probably Cornwall. I've seen that dress in some other photo somewhere - reminds me of being an art historian all over again. [Nick Wadley] Possibly Glasgow UK 1952

At Kilve in the fifties
Holidays in Kilve were a popular family tradition. I remember going there several times as a child in the sixties. We stayed at the `Hut` which was literally a Nissen Hut owned by the Derricks. They lived two doors up from my grandparents at the top of the road in Keynsham. Also in the picture are Eileen and Charles Phillimore - good friends of my grandparents. Kilve Somerset UK 1958
